HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY, KENTUCKY, by Robert Peter, ed. By William H. Perrin, O. L. Baskin Co., Chicago, 1882. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC, 1979. GEORGE W. CLARK, farmer, P. O. Lexington, whose father, Jonathan, was in the Revolutionary war, and held the rank of Colonel, is a native of Virginia, and was born August 24, 1798. His mother, Sarah, whose maiden name was Hite, was also a native Virginian. The Clark family, which can be traced back to German ancestors, removed to Jefferson county in 1802, and there our subject resided till after the death of his parents, that of the father occurring in 1811, that of the mother seven years later. George W. has from a boy been accustomed to farm work, and has followed it steadily during his youth and manhood. In 1822, he married, and left Jefferson for Fayette County, settling upon the farm he now occupies, and which he has improved till it ranks as one of the finest in the rich region in the midst of which it is situated. He chose for a wife Martha A., daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Ferguson) Price. This lady was born in Lincoln County in November, 1804, and died in 1831, having been the mother of four daughters, one of whom, Ann, is dead. The other three are living - Sarah, widow of J. E. Rogers; Elizabeth, wife of John McMurtry, and Julia, wife of J. R. Gross.
