History of Fayette County, Kentucky, by Robert Peter, ed. by William H. Perrin, O.L. Baskin Co., Chicago, 1882. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC, 1979. BENJAMIN R. ALLEN, farmer, P. O. Chilesburg, was born in Fayette County, June 22, 1826. He is of a Virginian family, which since the early settlement of Kentucky, has been closely connected with all matters pertaining to the progress of the country, and which has, from time to time, furnished men of distinction in public affairs. His grandfather, Joseph Allen, born in Virginia, September 7, 1766, took an active part in the war of 1812, patriotically leaving a wife and children to join the army. He was married February 5, 1789, to Sarah Craig, also a native of Virginia, born May 18, 1766, and also of a family prominent in the annals of Kentucky. They came bringing their family to Fayette County, Ky., during the early influx of settlers to this attractive region, and from that time lived on the land they first located till their death, the mother dying August 23, 1818, the father January 24, 1825. A son, Beaufort E. Allen, born in Fayette County, June 19, 1801, became a useful minister of the United Baptist Church, being Pastor of the Boone's Creek congregation from the time of his ordination till his death on December 9, 1861, a period of twenty-five years. His widow survived him till April 22, 1873. She was Elenora B., daughter of Joseph Graves, and was married to Beaufort E. Allen, February 7, 1822. They had eleven children, of whom seven are still living, our subject being one of them. The name Graves is also associated with the progress of the Blue Grass Region, both during and since the stirring times of the last century's close, and the present century's beginning. They and the Allens were principally farmers, and became extensive land owners in Fayette and adjoining counties. Benjamin R. Allen has been a resident of his native county during his whole live, and has been extensively engaged in farming. On September 2, 1856, he married Ann E., daughter of Jacob and Caroline (Grimes) Embry, whose family came from South Carolina in the early pioneer times and settled in Madison County, Ky., where the name, Embry, is, to-day, quite common. Through the maternal line, Mrs. Allen is descended from that sister of Daniel Boone who married William Bryan. Another of Boone's sisters married a Craig, a relative of Mr. Allen's paternal grandmother. Mr. and Mrs. Allen have five children living-Carrie, wife of E. D. Wallace; Beaufort E., Mattie., Benjamin G., and Jacob E. A daughter Jennie, is dead. The Allens are all members of the Baptist Church, of which the grandfather of the younger generation was so great an ornament.
