HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY KENTUCKY, by Robert Peter, ed. by William H. Perrin, O. L. Baskin Co., Chicago, 1882. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC, 1979. Page 556 R. M. ADAMS, merchant, Lexington, is of a family dating back in the history of the Blue Grass Region in 1738. He entered on a six years'[sic] apprenticeship to the tailor's trade in 1828, in Lexington, where there were then forty tailors' [sic] apprentices - now there are but two. He worked as a journeyman till 1847, when he and Robert McElhinny began business together, having as competitors in trade William & Wilson, on Cheapside; A. S. & E. H. Drake, where now is the St Nicholas Hotel; Thomas Rankin, two doors west, and William North, on Short street[sic]. Mr. Adams served in the Mexican war, being a member of Company K, First Kentucky Cavalry, under Capt. O. P. Beard. Besides himself, there are but two of the company surviving--James Moore and Calvin Morgan--both of Lexington. Mr. Adams has not troubled himself with politics. He is a well-informed man, having read extensively, and is a recognized member of the best social circles of Lexington.
