"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone, Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, p. 481. Used by permission. (Daviess) JUDGE CLARENCE WILLIAM WELLS: This outstanding layman and Christian lawyer was born near Utica, Daviess County, Kentucky, on June 22, 1864, and was the son of James W. and Susan Yeiser Wells. He received his early education in the public schools, and in the year 1887, received the A.B. Degree from Georgetown College. He later studied law at the University of Michigan, and in the year 1892 began the practice of his chosen profession, after having been admitted to the bar the previous year. Besides practicing his profession throughout the years of his life, he also served as the City Clerk of Owensboro in 1900; as United States Commissioner in 1916-1917; and as County Judge of Daviess County in 1918-1921. In the year 1901 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Small of Owensboro, Kentucky. One son, C. W. Wells Jr., also a lawyer, and one daughter, Elizabeth, blessed this union. The widow and two children still survive him. Early in life, Judge Wells became a member of the First Baptist Church of Owensboro, Kentucky, and held membership in the Church until his death, which occurred on October 6, 1936, at the age of seventy-two. In that time he served the Church as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Moderator, and Superintendent of a mission Sunday School. His religious activities were not confined to his Church altogether, for we find him serving the Association as Assistant Clerk in 1898-1905 and 1907 and as Clerk in 1906 and 1908. He was elected as Moderator of the Association in 1913 and again in 1914. For some time he served as Chairman of the Executive Mission Board of the Association. As a Christian and as a public servant, C. W. Wells was looked upon with high regard by all who knew him. In character and service he was unimpeachable. He is buried in the Elmwood Cemetery, Owensboro, Kentucky. Wells Yeiser Small = Georgetown-Scott MI http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/daviess/wells.cw.txt
