THOMAS D. MARTIN is one of the pioneers of Daviess County residing on
his farm at Masonville, Masonville Precinct, and one of the few old
settlers now residing in the county.  He was born on Plum Creek, in
Shelby County, Ky., June 27, 1819.  His parents were Joseph M. and
Elizabeth (King) Martin.  His father was born in Virginia and came with
his parents to Shelby County, Ky., when nine or ten years old.  He was
married in Shelby County and himself and wife were members of the
Baptist church.  They had a family of two sons and one daughter.  Thomas
D., subject of this sketch, was the eldest.  When two years of age he
removed with his parents to what is now Washington County, Ind.,
settling on Bear Creek; when four years old, in 1823, came with his
parents to Daviess County, Ky., settling in the timber near Bethabara
church, in this precinct.  At that time Owensboro was but a small place
of six or eight log cabins.  Old Davy Martin kept a store of general
merchandise on a small scale.  Isaac and James Kennady, uncle and
nephew, also kept a small store.  A doggery, where whisky and groceries
were sold on a small scale, was kept by James and Stephen Rogers.  Mr.
Martin remained on the old homestead until twenty-one years old, when he
married Miss Cyntha [sic] Gordon, June 30, 1840.  She was born in Shelby
County, Ky., and was a daughter of William and Elizabeth (Miller)
Gordon, natives of Virginia.  After his marriage Mr. Martin settled on a
farm near his father, in Masonville Precinct, some four miles northeast
of where he now resides.  They had three children; two lived, viz.: John
W., born Nov. 2, 1842, who married Miss Rebecca Yewell, and died Oct.
28, 1868; Mary A., born July 18, 1845; is the wife of John S. Mobberly,
and resides on their farm in Masonville Precinct.  Mrs. Martin died Oct.
10, 1847.  She was a member of the Baptist church, which she joined when
thirteen years old.  Mr. Martin married Miss Margaret Tanner, June 4,
1849.  She was born in McLean County (at that time called Daviess
County), May 5, 1828, and was a daughter of Thomas and Anna (Davis)
Tanner; the former was from North Carolina, and was in the war of 1812;
himself and brother Frederic was in the battle of New Orleans; the
latter was from Virginia, and was a member of the Baptist church.  Mr.
and Mrs. Martin are members of the Baptist church at Sugar Grove, and
have had eight children, viz.: Benjamin M., born April 28, 1850, died
when four months old; Nannie G., born Sept. 21, 1851, married John
Steele, and resides in Sorghotown; Joseph M., born Jan. 26, 1854, died
when an infant; Thomas T., born Nov. 7, 1857; Theodore L., born Jan. 8,
1858, is teaching school in Russell District, Murray Precinct; Cora N.,
born Aug. 14, 1861; William A., born Oct. 27, 1865; Maud M., born Oct.
14, 1867.  Mr. Martin owns a farm of seventy six acres where he and his
family reside.  He raises corn, wheat, tobacco and hay; also raises
stock.  He has lived to see Daviess County undergo many important and
interesting changes; has held various local offices of trust in his
precinct, and has always taken an active interest in the schools.  In
politics he is a Democrat, and has always been a supporter of that
party; is of German-English descent.  Mr. Martin is one of the
enterprising citizens of Daviess County, where he has been a resident
since 1823.  He is a self-made man.
