TAPLEY MADDUX was born in Shelby County, Ky., May 10, 1820. His parents were Nelson and Narcissa (Bauchamp) Maddux, natives of Virginia, and members of the Baptist church. They had a family of four sons and four daughters, four living--Matilda, who married Geo. Swoope and is a widow, residing with her daughter Amanda in Louisville; Julia, wife of Mr. Pie, hatter, of Cincinnati, Ohio; Eliza A., wife of Mr. Pickens, of Chicago, Ill.; and Tapley. In the fall of 1827 he came with his parents to Daviess County. His father settled on a farm eight miles east of Owensboro, in Upper Town Precinct, where Tapley remained until his marriage to Telitha Pursell, March 1, 1841. She was born in Knottsville Precinct, Daviess County, and was a daughter of Thomas and Susan Pursell. In 1844 Mr. Maddux settled on a farm in Knottsville Precinct and opened the first grocery store at the cross roads of the Hardin and Knottsville roads. In 1854 Mr. Maddux sold out and located at Pleasant Point, Upper Town Precinct, and opened a store and was appointed Postmaster; remained here until the war broke out, when he sold out and went to Owensboro and clerked in a grocery store until the close of the war. He then bought back his place at Pleasant Point and opened a store of general merchandise and remained here six or seven years; then went to Owensboro, and bought property and eighteen acres of land east of Owensboro, where the coal banks now are. In 1876 came to Bethabara and opened his present store, where he carries a stock of general merchandise. Mr. and Mrs. Maddux had four children, two living--Susan, wife of Reuben Hickman, a Mason, of Owensboro; Matilda, wife of George Camp. Mr. Maddux owns a nice house adjoining his store, where he and wife reside. He is a member of Brannon Lodge, A. F. & A. M., at Bethabara. In politics he is rather independent voting for men rather than party. He has served as Sheriff of this county.
