KIRK (deceased) was born in Shelby County, Ky., Dec. 18, 1818. His parents were James and Jane (Tyler) Kirk, natives of Virginia. James A. was but two years old when he came with his parents to Daviess County, and settled on a farm in Masonville Precinct. He married Elizabeth Cottrell, Sept. 28, 1848. She was born in Shelby County, Ky., Nov. 15, 1824, and was a daughter of Joseph and Lucy (Bryant) Cottrell, natives of Virginia and Kentucky. After Mr. and Mrs. Kirk were married they lived on a farm in Knottsville Precinct four years, then moved on the old homestead farm, where he died June 15, 1878. He was a member of the Bethabara church. He and wife had a family of eight children, six living--Lucy I., born Aug. 30, 1844; Benjamin C., born Feb. 14, 1856; Burr P., born July 28, 1858, married Dora Arnold, Feb. 23, 1881; John N. E., born Dec. 18, 1860; Thomas J., born Jan. 7, 1864, and Anna M., born Dec. 8, 1867. Mrs. Kirk resides on the old homestead farm with her children. She is now in the fifty-seventh year of her age; is a member of the Baptist church at Bethabara.
