"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 466-467. Used by permission. [Daviess] DEACON J. S. H. KIGEL: Deacon John Solomon Henry Kigel was born in Ohio County on April 10, 1840, and was the son of Solomon and Susan Spence Kigel. His father was born in August, 1801, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died in Owensboro, Ky., August 20, 1856. He had long been engaged in mercantile pursuits here and was a man of prominence and influence in the community. For years he was a member of the First Baptist Church. Our subject received his education in private and public schools at Owensboro and then became associated with his father in the general merchandise business, until his father's death after which he spent two years on his uncle's farm. Coming then to Owensboro, he was employed at various occupations for a time and subsequently engaged in teaching school, following that profession for three years. He then formed a partnership with Gordon Robinson, under the firm name of Robinson and Son, and engaged in the mercantile business at Newville (now Maxwell), Kentucky. At the end of six years Bro. Kigel bought his partner's interest and continued the business four years under his own name. In the meantime he had established another store at Glenville, Daviess County, Kentucky and continued in business there for fifteen years, until March 19, 1892, when he sold out and came to Owensboro, where he had made some real estate investments. About the year 1896 he bought Mr. Castlen's interest in the firm of A. H. Kigel and Company and became a partner with his son, A. H. Kigel, with whom he continued the men's furnishings business under the same firm until 1919 when he retired from active business. Bro. Kigel was married three times; first, on February 20, 1863, to Miss Ann Boyd, of Daviess County. She lived but ten years after their marriage. Six children blessed this union. Miss Clyde Kigel still lives in Owensboro. Bro. Kigel married Miss Virginia Shackelford, of McLean County, on March 12, 1874. She lived but a short time and on November 1, 1876, he married Miss Martha A. Coke, of McLean County, who was born June 13, 1844, and died September 11, 1923, at the advanced age of seventy-nine years. He became a member of Green Brier Church by profession and baptism about the year 1865. He was elected clerk of the Church in 1870 and filled this position for seven years. He was ordained as deacon of this Church in November, 1872, and continued to serve in this capacity until he moved his membership to Glenville Church in February, 1886, where he continued to serve in the same capacity for this Church until 1892, when he came to Owensboro. He moved his membership to the First Baptist Church immediately and remained a member until about 1899 when he again moved his membership, this time to the Walnut Street Church, where it remained until his death. In that time he served the Church as Deacon in a faithful and efficient manner. From 1906 through 1920 he served faithfully as a member of the District Mission Board. After a life of unusual activity, both civil and religious, our brother departed this life on March 1, 1928, at the advanced age of eighty-eight years. Because of his earnest and upright life, his splendid business record, and his public-spirited interest in the welfare of his community, he was long regarded as one of the foremost citizens of the city of Owensboro and commanded the veneration and respect of all who knew him. His life was a benediction and blessing to all who gained his acquaintance.
