"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, p. 464. Used by permission. [Daviess] BROADUS SMITH JENKINS: B. S. Jenkins was born in Ohio County, Kentucky, near Cromwell, on October 16, 1882, and was the son of Elder B. F. Jenkins and Elizabeth Arnold Jenkins. His mother died the following day after his birth. His early youth was spent on a farm near Habit, Daviess County, Kentucky. Here he attended the common schools and also normal school. For some time he attended the Bowling Green Business University and the Owensboro Business College. After receiving his education, he, for a short time, taught in the Owensboro Business College, and then he entered the insurance business, where he labored with success both as an agent and as a manager from 1908 to 1917. During the first World War he conducted a business school here in Owensboro but later returned to Missouri to continue in the insurance business. He returned to Owensboro, Kentucky, in 1935, and opened the Jenkins Business Training School, which he conducted in cooperation with his wife until his death. Brother Jenkins was baptized into the fellowship of the Bethabara Church, in 1891, by Elder J. N. Jarnagin. He was very active in his religious life, having been reared in the home of one of the most beloved Baptist preachers of the Green River country, Elder B. F. Jenkins, his father. From 1933 he served as deacon in the First Church of Joplin, Missouri; Springdale Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Robboson Avenue Church of Joplin, Missouri. His membership was with the Third Baptist Church, Owensboro, Kentucky, for several years. In the meantime he served in numerous Sunday Schools and Churches as a Sunday School teacher and speaker. From 1935 through 1940 he served as the Assistant Moderator of the Association. In 1941 he was elected to the chair of Moderator. Owing to ill health at the time he declined the election for the second year and the author was elected to succeed him. He became the second son of a former Moderator to serve in this office. His father, Elder B. F. Jenkins, served the Association as Moderator in 1909-1910. Elder John A. Bennett had also served several years and was the son of Elder W. P. Bennett, a former Moderator. Brother Jenkins married Miss Catherine Perrigo, the daughter of Christopher S. and Jane Prescott Perrigo, on October 15, 1917. They had no children. Mrs. Jenkins has been active for some time in teaching in the Sunday School of the Third Baptist Church, Owensboro, Kentucky. She is still conducting the Jenkins Business School since her husband's death. Mr. Jenkins was one of the chief proponents of the Baptist Hour and served on the program committee until his death on July 17, 1943. He also served as the other member of the Associational History Committee from December, 1939, and rendered valuable assistance to the author in the preparation of this work. His funeral was conducted from the Third Baptist Church on July 19th, of this year, by the pastor, Rev. A. F. Cagle, assisted by the author and Revs. L. C. Roberts and W. B. Watts. He was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
