"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 395-396. Used by permission. [Daviess] ROBERT EDWARD HUMPHREYS, D.D.: The subject of this sketch is the son of Nathaniel K. Humphreys and Margaret E. Hutton and was born in Morristown, Tennessee, on June 10, 1893. He attended the schools at hand and secured a good education. He received the A.B. Degree from Carson-Newman College in 1916 and the Th.G. Degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1919. Since that time he has been the recipient of the D.D. Honorary Degree from Bethel Woman's College, Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky. The last mentioned institution conferred the degree upon him in June, 1943. Our brother made a confession of faith in Christ at the age of eleven and united with the First Baptist Church of Johnson City, Tennessee, being baptized by Rev. J. H. Snow. He was licensed to preach by the Central Baptist Church of Johnson City, Tennessee, in 1914 and was ordained to the ministry in June, 1915, with Dr. George Green, the pastor, and other ministers serving as the ordaining council. During his college and seminary days our brother served some country Churches. In the year 1919 he became pastor of the Central Baptist Church at Beardon, Tennessee a position he held until September. 1927, when he became pastor of the First Baptist Church, Owensboro, Kentucky, a position he still holds. Since becoming pastor of the First Baptist Church Dr. Humphreys has led the Church in paying off the large debt of $135,000.00 in principal and interest that resulted from the erection of the present house of worship. In that time the membership has grown from 1,500 to about 2,000, and over 2,000 persons have been received into the membership by baptism, letter, and statement. A total of over $500.000.00 has been raised for all purposes during that time with almost $150.000.00 of this amount being raised for missions and benevolence. The Church has also erected the Crabtree Avenue Mission in the west end of the city which will become the eighth Baptist Church in Owensboro sometime in the near future. Almost $20,000.00 has been expended in this work alone. Dr. Humphreys's work has not been confined to his own Church. He has been very active in supporting the work of the entire Baptist Denomination. He preached the Annual Sermon before the Daviess- McLean Baptist Association in 1929 and the Doctrinal Sermon before the Association in 1940. He preached the Annual Sermon before the General Association of Kentucky Baptists in 1940. For several years he served on the Committee of Nine in Kentucky Baptist Education and is at present the Chairman of the Education Committee of Kentucky Baptists which is attempting to raise one and one-half million dollars for our educational institutions. He has served on the Kentucky State Board of Missions; as a member of the Board of the Baptist Ministers' Aid Society of Kentucky; as a Director of the Baptist Education Society in Kentucky and as the Kentucky representative on the Relief and Annuity Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. In all of these positions he has acquitted himself well. His executive ability is pronounced and everywhere recognized. At one time he was offered the position of State Secretary of Kentucky Baptists but declined because he felt led of the Lord to continue in the work of the pastorate. His membership in the Daviess-McLean Executive Mission Board has been helpful and inspiring. The missionary spirit in this Assocation [sic] has been greatly intensified by the forward steps of his Church and the influence has reached out to other Churches. Dr. Humphreys was united in marriage to Miss Willie Renfro, of Spring City, Tennessee, on May 11, 1918. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Renfro. One son, Robert Edward, Jr., and two daughters, Martha Jane and Margaret Emeline, have blessed this union. The son, at present, is in the United States Army. The ministry of our brother has been evangelistic and missionary. In these two fields he is perhaps without a peer. The successes that have crowned his labors prove that such a ministry is a glory to God and a blessing to multitudes. Dr. Humphreys is one our most outstanding preachers and leaders. May his useful ministry continue to be a blessing and benediction to all.
