Used by permission. [Daviess] DEACON MORTON JOSHUA HOLBROOK, SR.: M. J. Holbrook, Sr., at present, is serving his country as a member of the Daviess County Draft Board, Number 36 and is Chairman of the said Board. He has three sons in the Army and one is now a prisoner of war of the Japanese Government. He was born at Buford, Ohio County, Kentucky, on March 8, 1877, and is the son of John D. and Oma Field Holbrook. He attended the common schools at hand and also Hartford College. He spent one term in the University of Kentucky and in the year 1901 graduated in Law from the Law Department of the Southern Normal Business College, Bowling Green, Kentucky. He has used his knowledge extensively in the field of banking, serving as the assistant cashier of the Bank of Whitesville from 1903 to 1909, as the cashier from 1909 to 1932, and since the last mentioned date he has served as the president of this same bank. He became a Chrsitian [sic] in the year 1892 and was baptized into the fellowship of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Ohio County, by Rev. E. J. Maddox. His membership has been with the Whitesville Church since about 1903. In that time he has served as Sunday School Superintendent for a period of twenty-five years and has served as a deacon of the Church since June, 1924. He has also been the efficient treasurer of the Church since 1924 and has taught the Men's Bible Class for several years. He has been a messenger to the Association from his Church on many occasions during the years of his membership with the Church and at one time served as the assistant Moderator. Whitesville Church does not have a more faithful and devoted member than Deacon M. J. Holbrook, Sr. He was united in marriage to Miss Ida Simpson, the daughter of Justin and Jane Haynes Simpson, on March 10, 1901. They have three sons and four daughters. All of the sons, as has already been mentioned, are at present in the armed services of our country.
