A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943 by Wendell H. Rone, Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky. Used by permission. p. 262. Daviess DARNELL DOWDEN, D.D.: In almost every record where we find the name of this brother it is invariably given as being D. Dowden. Our subject was born in Woodford County, Ky., January 2, 1824. Although he received but a scant knowledge of letters in his youth by dint of close application in study in later years he became a good scholar and acquired some knowledge of the Greek language. After making a profession of faith in Christ he united with the Little Mount Church in his native county and near which he was born and reared. This was about the year 1839. He was licensed to preach by the same Church in 1841 and ordained in 1843. After serving some churches in and near his home he moved to the town of Leitchfield in about the year 1852. He took charge of the church there and also some churches nearby. He labored in this field about ten years and then moved to Breckenridge County where he lived to the end of his earthly life. His fields of labor were in Anderson, Washington, Spencer, Daviess, Grayson, Meade, and Breckenridge Counties; and his ministry of fifty years was greatly blessed in the organization of new churches and in soulwinning. He was a man of rich religious experience and ardent piety of deep convictions and courage to avow them. He was readily recognized as a theologian, thinker, an instructive preacher, and able writer. His death occurred in the city of Louisville, Ky., on the night of May 15, 1891, in the 68th year of his age. He assisted in the constitution of Macedonia Church in 1849 and Calhoun in 1850. In the years 1851 and 1852 he served as the Missionary of the Daviess County Association and his labors were rewarded with successful revivals in many places. He pastored Pleasant Grove Church in 1849-1850 and Yelvington in 1850-1852. We know of no other particulars of his useful life other than that he was Moderator of Goshen Association from about 1875 to 1890: a period of fifteen years.
