"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, p. 452. Used by permission. [Daviess] DEACON JOSEPH PEAY CRABTREE: Bro. J. P. Crabtree was for years one of the leading members of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was born on a farm in Daviess County, Kentucky, near Sorgho, on May 17, 1853. He lived and died near the place of his birth. His father was Green P. Crabtree and his mother was Bettie Carlin. At the age of about eighteen he was converted in the hay loft of his father's farm and was later baptized into the fellowship of the Pleasant Grove Church by Rev. A. J. Miller. His middle name shows him to have been named after Rev. J. M. Peay, a venerable and saintly Baptist preacher of this section for many years. His educational advantages were never very good because of the fact that his father died when he was twelve years of age and he was left to assume the responsibilities along with his widowed mother and several younger children. Nevertheless, he was a man of brilliant intellect and was a student all of his life. He followed the occupation of farming all of his life and at one time served as magistrate. He served as the Sunday School Superintendent of the Pleasant Grove Church for thirty-five years and as a deacon for about forty- five years. In the meantime he also served as the assistant Moderator of the Church and as a teacher in the Sunday School. At the time of his death he was the senior deacon of the Church. He was married to Miss Alice Gregory in 1874. Five children, three sons and two daughters blessed this union. Two of the sons died while young. The other three children are: Mrs. Maurice H. Ford, Mrs. J. H. Williams and Mr. W. Green Crabtree. The first Mrs. Crabtree died in 1913 and in the year 1915 he married Miss Anna Graham. She still survives him. Mr. Crabtree died at the advanced age of eighty-six, on October 10, 1939. He took an active interest in the work of the Association and often served as a messenger from his Church. He was a friend and great admirer of Rev. John A. Bennett. Being a man blessed with means as well as ability he was one of the main financial supporters of the work of the Pleasant Grove Church through the years. He served his generation well and died in the triumphant hope of a blessed immortality.
