JOHN A. CASTLEN was born in Madison, Ind., Nov. 24, 1828, and is a son 
of John A. Castlen, a native of Virginia, who died in Madison, Ind., of 
the cholera, in 1832.  Our subject's mother was Elizabeth Leet, and a 
native also of Virginia.  She brought her family to Oldham County, Ky., 
and located near Louisville in 1832.  She now resides in this county, 
and is seventy-nine years old.  Mr. Castlen was reared a farmer's boy, 
and received a common-school education.  He came to Daviess County in 
1856, and settled in Upper Town Precinct.  In 1868 he went to Owensboro, 
and in company with a Mr. Guthrie built the Owensboro City Foundry, but 
in 1872 returned to his farm.  When a young man Mr. Castlen worked for 
four years at the carpenter's trade.  He came to his present farm of 300 
acres, four miles southwest of Knottsville, in 1875, where he is engaged 
in farming and stock-raising.  He was married in 1856 to Miss Martha 
Carder, daughter of Madison Carder.  They have eight children--Ida Bell, 
William F., Elwood, John D., Eugene, Sallie, Katie and Claudie R.  Mr. 
Castlen is a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the Methodist 
Episcopal church.
