"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 366-367. Used by permission. [Daviess] JOSEPH CHESTER BADGETT, A.B., Th.M: This young minister of the Gospel who has been serving as pastor of the Utica Baptist Church since January, 1942, was born in Casey County, Kentucky, on January 18, 1915, and is the son of T. F. and Lelia McLanahan Badgett. In his youth he attended the grade schools at hand and graduated from High School. He also finished Georgetown College in 1936 with the degree of A.B. Having already dedicated his life to the work of the Gospel Ministry he entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, the following fall. He received the Master of Theology degree from that institution in May, 1939, and immediately entered into the graduate work looking forward to securing the degree of Doctor of Theology. At present he has completed that work and also the examination but has not as yet completed his Thesis. Brother Badgett was converted at the age of nine and was baptized into the fellowship of the Stanford Baptist Church by Rev. E. S. Summers. By this same Church he was licensed to preach in the spring of 1933. After going away to secure his college education he placed his membership in the Georgetown Baptist Church. By this Church he was ordained to the ministry in his home Church at Stanford on January 13, 1935. The ordaining council was composed of Revs. J. W. Thompson, B. L. Hargrove, W. W. Stout, J. B. Dailey, and A. Hilton. After serving the Clear Creek Church in Woodford County from 1934 to 1939 and the Little Mount Church in Spencer County from 1939 through 1941 he assumed the pastorate of the Utica Church in this Association in January, 1942. In all his pastorates he has been successful both from the evangelistic and practical standpoints. The work has shown marked improvement as a result of his painstaking ministry. We predict an increased usefulness for our young brother in his work. The subject of our sketch was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Cloyd, the daughter of James C. and Frances Weaver Cloyd of Louisville, Kentucky, on September 15, 1936. They have two sons-J. C. Junior and James Thomas. Mrs. Badgett is a graduate of Georgetown College, CLASS OF 1935, and has also completed some work in the W. M. U. Training School in Louisville, Ky. She is a valuable asset and help to the ministry of her husband. Brother Badget [sic] has served as Assistant Moderator of the Elkhorn Association and has preached the annual sermon before the Elkhorn and Shelby County Associations.
