A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943 by Wendell H. Rone, Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky. Used by permission. p. 252. Daviess Co. ISHAM R. ALLEN: The subject of this sketch first saw the light of day in Scott County, Kentucky, on January 23, 1799. He moved to Owensboro, Ky., in February, 1831. Young Allen was a wicked and profane youth, but on professing faith in Christ, in 1839, was baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist Church in Owensboro by the celebrated Elder John L. Burrows, who at the time was conducting a revival in Owensboro and adjacent communities and was also pastor of the Baptist Church. Our subject was licensed to preach by the Owensboro Church in December, 1840. In July, 1842, he united with the Pleasant Grove Church and was ordained by this Church on October 16, 1842. He served the Church at Pleasant Grove as supply pastor for a number of years when the regular pastor was absent and also as the pastor in the years 1847-1849. His missionary zeal is to be noted in that he was instrumental in gathering many churches on both sides of the Ohio River. On several occasions he served the Daviess County Association as missionary. He labored with great success with such men as Elders John G. Howard and William Head. Elder Allen was a very impulsive man, sometimes very eccentric, and his gift consisted principally in exhortation. During the latter years of his life he preached but little. After being in the ministry for almost twenty-four years he was called to lay his armor by. He died at his home in Owensboro on January 7, 1866, at the age of sixty-six. The records of the Churches and the Association show that he pastored South Carrollton Church in 1853; Brushy Fork in 1847-1849; Mt. Liberty in 1844; and others unknown to us. He served as messenger to the Association from Pleasant Grove from 1844 to 1863; as missionary for the Association in 1853 and 1857. He was present and assisted in the organization of Brushy Fork Church in 1846 and Macedonia Church in 1849, and perhaps others of which we have no information. An interesting item in his life is that he was born in January, married in January, and died in January. We have found no information concerning his family life.
