W.L. CLEMENT was born March 10, 1838, and is a son of John R. and Sarah S.
(Hughes) Clement.  John R. Clement was born in this county, March 7, 1810.
His parents came from Virginia to this county about 1802.  He settled on
the farm now owned by subject; bought 450 acres and at one time owned
about 1,000 acres, which was subsequently divided among his children.  At
one time he engaged in the saw-milling business, and also merchandised at
old Clementsburg.  He died April 28, 1858.  W.L. Clement is the second of
a family of ten children, of whom seven are now living:  Mrs. Sarah J.
Walker, at Marion; John R., in Ford's Ferry District; W.L.; Anastasia,
wife of I.R. Nunn; Mary, wife of James Gill, in Cave-in-Rock, Ill.; Ellen
and James, in Webster County.  He received his education in the schools of
this county, and at the Cumberland Presbyterian College, at Princeton.  
At the age of thirty years he began life for himself, and has always
resided on the home place.  He now owns about 360 acres, of which there 
are about 160 acres in cultivation.  Mr. Clement was married October 8,
1861, to Miss Nancy E. Williams, daughter of George and Eliza 
(Wallingford) Williams, natives of Virginia.  This lady was born in this 
county, and is the mother of eight children, of whom seven are now living:
Ida F., Kosciusko, Mary E., John M., George L., Virgie L. and Sallie K.
