Dr. John J. Dickey Diary, Fleming County, Ky. Recorded in the 1870's and beyond. Reprinted in Kentucky Explorer, Vol 10, Number 10, April, 1996. p. 84. By permission. Clay County. AMERICA MARCUM LINDEN I was born on Red Bird Creek in Clay County, February 13, 1839. My father was Alfred Marcum. He was born on Wild Cat Creek, Buncombe, County, North Carolina, March 2, 1803. His father was Thomas Marcum, who emigrated first from Buncombe County, North Carolina, to Virginia and located on the Potomac River. He did not stay there long, for he came to Red Bird, Clay County, when my father was 12 years old, which would make it 1815. He died at Travelers Rest and is buried there. His father came to Red Bird, also. My great grandfather and he are buried on Red Bird. I do not know which came first or whether they both came together. My grandfather had a brother. He is the grandfather of Thomas Marcum of Catlettsburg, ex-Registrar of the Land Office. Tom's father was William. My grandfather had children as follows: 9 boys and 3 girls, William, Squire, Alfred, Thomas, John, Lewis, Hiram, Phillip, James, Mahala (Jake Gabbard), Nancy (Sam Cooper). William went to Missouri, had 12 childen and died in Buckh??? County, Missouri; Squire had a large family and died in Clay; James had a large family and died in Jackson County; John raised a large family in Jackson County; Lewis raised a large family in Estill County; Phillip is still living in Oklahoma; Thomas and Hiram died in Clay; Alfred died in Breathitt. Thomas Marcum of Muscogee was elected to Congress from Indian Territory last November though there was no authority for the election. He was Free Silver, and his opponent was a Republican. Marcum got 40 to 1. My grandfather's wife was Mary Wilson, and my great grandmother was a Connally. My great grandfather is buried where Pleasant Wilson now lives and where I was born. There are tombstones at his grave with dates on his birth and death.
