His father, Walter G., was a native of Maryland, born March 10, 1786, was a carpenter by trade, went to Kentucky when a young man, where he met and married Elizabeth Burton, a native of Fayette County, Ky., born in 1796. In 1829 they moved to Washington County, Ind., and engaged in farming, until their deaths, the former dying, March 16, 1876, his wife in 1880. Our subject's early life was passed on his father's farm and attending the schools of that day. He later learned the carpenter's trade and peddled clocks and tinware, continuing until 1855, with the exception of one year, when he was conductor on the L. N. A. & C. R. R. In 1855 he entered the firm of Platt, Martin & Gordon of Salem as clerk. After four year's service he bought out the firm. In 1863 he succeeded his former employer, D. B. Platt, in the manufacturing of wagons and carriages. In 1865 he established a foundary and machine-shop. In 1861 he married Mary Telle, a native of Philadelphia, Penn. There are two children by this marriage - Fannie and Charles W. Mr. Mobley's life has been one of great activity and industry and irreproachable integrity. He is a Republican.
