Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, by H. Levin, editor, 1897. Published by Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press. p. 104. Christian County. JOSEPH I. LANDES, ex-judge of the court of Appeals, was born in Hopkinsville, Christian county, Kentucky, January 3, 1836. His father was Isaac Landes, a native of Rockingham county, Virginia, born October 4, 1796, his parents being Daniel and Katherine (Coffman) Landes, both natives of Virginia, but of German extraction. They came to Kentucky and in 1805 settled in Muhlenburg [sic] county, where they remained. Isaac Landes married Susannah Kelly, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Summers) Kelley, a native of Bourbon county, Kentucky, born March 3, 1803. Her parents settled in Christian county early in the century. Joseph Kelly was a native of Maryland, of Irish parentage; his wife was born in Fairfax county, Virginia, and was distantly related to the Lee family. Isaac Landes died September 29, 1870. Susannah Landes, his wife, surviving him until February 4, 1873. Joseph I. Landes was educated in the preparatory and academic schools at Hopkinsville and at Hardinsburg. His early inclination was toward the law and his study had been directed to that end. Having acquired a good English education, he read law with Hiram A. Phelps, of Hopkinsville, a successful and accomplished practitioner, and later attended the University of Virginia, where he studied under Professor John B. Minor. He was admitted to the bar in April, 1858, and entered on the practice at once, since which time he has been actively engaged in his professional duties, with the exception of a brief period during the war, when he served as adjutant of the Eighth Kentucky Cavalry, United States Volunteers. He filled acceptably the office of county attorney of Christian county from 1862 to 1864; city judge of Hopkinsville from 1870 to 1874, and state senator from 1893 to 1896, resigning the latter office in March, 1896, to accept an appointment to the court of appeals bench from Governor W. O. Bradley, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Judge John R. Grace. His term on the bench expired by the election of his successor, Judge J. D. White, who took his seat December 4, 1896. Judge Lanes has been devoted to his profession; his official life has been in line with the exercise of his legal talent, and in the discharge of every duty he has met the full measure of public approbation accorded to the faithful and intelligent discharge of the trusts imposed. He has been engaged in much of the important litigation in his section of the state. Among other cases may be cited Clark versus McKenzie, 7 Bush, 423; Empire Coal & Mining Company versus McIntosh; 82 Kentucky, 605, Boyd versus Randolph, auditor's agent, 91 Kentucky, 472; Beard versus City of Hopkinsville, 95 Kentucky, 239; Brown versus Holland, 97 Kentucky, 249; Cowan versus Prowse, 93 Kentucky, 156. Judge Landes was a supporter of the Douglas wing of the Democracy in 1860, a Unionist during the war, and has been a consistent and active member of the Republican party since. He is a public-spirited and progressive citizen, looking to the best interest of the community, the state and the nation, by contributing to the advancement of all interests, educational, social and governmental, calculated to enhance the well-being of the individual and the community. He is a member of Hopkinsville Lodge, No. 37, F. & A.M., and high priest of Oriental Chapter, No. 14, Royal Arch Masons. Judge Landes was married April 17, 1865, to Miss Mary McDowell Carter, a daughter of Dr. Francis Carter, who was a native of Ireland, for many years a leading physician of Columbus, Ohio, and one of the founders of the Medical College at that place. Her mother was Anna (Starling) Carter, a descendant of the Starling and McDowell families, well know in Virginia and Kentucky. The Judge's family consists of his wife and adopted daughter, Anna, the child of his wife's sister.
