JOHN HOWE, a native of Enniskillen, North Ireland, was born April 24, 1823, a son of Root Howe, the latter a farmer, who, with his family, belonged to the Primitive Wesleyan Methodist Church. John Howe received a common school education, and remained on the farm until fifteen years of age, when he began to learn the tailor's trade, and five years later, in 1846, arrived in New York. The same year he settled in Flemingsburg, Fleming Co., Ky., where he engaged in the clothing and tailoring business, but in 1857, on account of cholera, he went to Urbana, Ill., and in 1859 removed to Carrollton, Ky., where he again worked at his trade. In 1865 he engaged in private banking, under the firm name of John Howe & Sons, in which business he continued until 1881, when the National Bank was organized at Carrollton, with Henry M. Winslow as president, and Mr. Howe as vice-president. In 1870 Mr. Howe built the Carrollton Woolen Mill, at an expense of $78,000, a building 100 x 155 feet, with an L 140 feet. The mill employs eighty hands, and manufactures jeans only, which are sold, principally, in Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville and New Orleans. June 2, 1846, Mr. Howe married Sarah Brown, a native of Ireland, who died in 1877. In 1880 he married Mrs. Jane Bell, also a native of Ireland, and five children, living, have been born to him, viz: William F., John I., Root J., Joseph B. and Sallie V. Mr. Howe is a Mason, a Knight Templar, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which church he is a steward. William F. Howe, the eldest son of John Howe, was born in Ireland April 18, 1846, and since the woolen-mill was built, in 1870, he has been business manager. He and his father are the largest stockholders in the mill, the others being Mrs. Sallie Froman (sister of William F.), Joseph, his brother, Mrs. John Howe and J. C. Webster. In October, 1873, William F. Howe married Miss Lou Winslow, daughter of W. B. Winslow and four children have blessed their union: Lillie, John, Jennie and Beverly. Mr. Howe has been county treasurer for twelve years, is a Knight Templar, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
