Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Carroll Co. JOHN M. GILTNER, cashier of the First National Bank of Carrollton, Ky., was born in that town September 24, 1855. His grandfather, Michael Giltner, was born in Bourbon County, Ky., in 1801, married Mary Lyter, also a native of Bourbon County, and removed to Carroll County in 1817. Francis Giltner, the father of John M., was born in Carroll County in 1825, married Miss Ellen Connor, a daughter of John Connor of Carroll County, and died in 1875. The great-grandfather of John M. Giltner was also named Francis, came from Lehigh County, Penn., and settled about four miles above Milton, Trimble Co., Ky. John M. Giltner was educated in the Madison High School. He began the active business of life by clerking in a grocery at Madison, Ind., and was then clerk on the river for ten years; he next became the cashier of the First National, which bank was organized in 1881, with Judge J. A. Donaldson as president, and a capital of $60,000; its deposits now amount to $75,000, and its surplus is $10,000; its profits or dividends amount to nine or ten per cent. April 14, 1880, Mr. Giltner married Miss Ida Phillips, of Eminence, Henry County, and the two children born to his union are named Virgie V. and Frank P. Mr. Giltner is the owner of a fine track of land containing eighty acres. Francis Giltner, the father of our subject, was the eldest in a family of eleven children, of whom three are living in this county: Barbara, Nannie E. and Mrs. Judge Joseph Donaldson. Barbara was married to Col. M. P. Pryor, who was born in Trimble County in 1832, and died January 8, 1873. He was twice elected sheriff of his county, but resigned, and went to Arkansas in 1869. Nannie E. Giltner was married to a Mr. Small.
