W. S. TAYLOR, clerk of the county court, was born on the Big Bend of the 
Green River, Butler County, October 10, 1853.  He did not commence going 
to school until fifteen years of age, and then was compelled to walk four 
miles through mud and storm.  After completing his course at the common 
schools he continued his studies at home, but while in the business of 
teaching, made specialties of mathematics, history and politics, in each 
of which he was well informed.  He commenced teaching in the fall of 
1874, in which business he was eminently successful.  In 1878 he made a 
contest for the position of county clerk, but was defeated by T. J. 
Bunch.  In 1880 he was assistant elector for the candidature of Gen. 
Weaver for the office of president of the United States.  In 1882 he was 
elected to the office of county clerk, which position he now fills.  
February 10, 1878, he married Sallie Be_l, only daughter of J. F. Tanner.  
This union was blessed with four children: Minnie Bell, who died in the 
summer of 1884, Tyler Florence, Alma Kline, and an infant.  Mr. Taylor is 
a fine public speaker and debater, and owes his success to his industry 
and studious habits.  In 1884 he joined the Republican party, and became 
an active supporter of Blaine and Logan.  He is a member of the 
Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
