Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B Bracken County LEONHART WITTMEIER was born in Prussia, April 22, 1840. He came to America in 1853 and located in Brown County, O. He subsequently engaged as a pilot on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers until 1861, when he enlisted in the Ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry; his regiment participated in the battles of Mill Springs, Pittsburgh Landing, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge and Lookout Mountain; he was discharged in the fall of 1864, when he returned to Augusta, Ky., and has since been engaged in agricultural pursuits. He is one of the substantial men of Augusta, is an active Democrat and an adroit politician. In October, 1866, he married Miss Eliza A. Schoolfield, a daughter of Joseph and Louisa (Prather) Schoolfield, of Bracken County. Joseph Schoolfield was born in Bracken County in 1801, and was educated at Augusta College, after which he read law with Hon. Martin Marshall, practicing his profession in Augusta. He was an ardent Democrat and a prominent member of the Bracken County bar. He held the offices of mayor, sheriff, and clerk of the Bracken County courts; he was also a member of the Legislature in 1836. His parents came from Maryland, and were pioneers of Kentucky.
