Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Boyle County. JOSHUA M. FIELDS was born July 20, 1823, in the house where he now resides in Mercer (now Boyle) County. His father, James Fields, a native of Mercer County, was born in 1783, was a soldier under Gen. Hopkins in the war of 1812, was a farmer and lost ten slaves as a result of the late war, and died in 1865. He was the son of William Fields, a native of Ireland, who learned the hatter's trade in Philadelphia, was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, a real pioneer and Indian fighter in Kentucky, a member of Capt. Harrod's company, a farmer and slave owner, settled the place where Joshua M. now lives, and died about 1835. He married a Mrs. Wright, and their offspring were James, Daniel, Henry, and Mrs. William Childs. James married Sarah, daughter of Frederick Ripperdam, of Mercer County (born in 1781, in the fort at Boonesboro, died in 1863) and to them were born William, Mary (deceased), Jeremiah (deceased), James, Joshua M., Frederick R., Jemima (deceased) and Jefferson (deceased). Joshua M. Fields has never taken upon himself the responsibilities of matrimony, and is enjoying a comfortable and quiet life. He is a farmer, owning 265 acres of fine land, in a high state of cultivation. He was formerly an old line Whig, but is now a Democrat. The maternal grandfather of Mr. Fields, Frederick Ripperdam, while in Capt. Harrod's company, had a horse shot from under him, by an Indian in battle. His children were Catherine (Shaw), John, Martha (Bragsdale), Esther (Wingate), Abram, Sarah (Fields), Susan (Fields), Mary (Wigham) and Frederick.
