J. C. FALES, professor in Centre College at Danville, was born December
30, 1836, in Thomaston, Me., and is a son of B. and Nancy (King) Fales,
who were natives of Maine and Nantucket Island, respectively, and to
whom two sons and two daughters were born.  Prof. Fales' father was an
attorney, served as judge in Maine and was a descendant of James Fales,
who came from Chester, England, in 1700.  The Professor grew up in his
native village, where he enjoyed the privileges of the common schools
and academy; received his collegiate education in New England.  In 1858
he removed to Lebanon, Ky., where he was employed in teaching for ten
years, and then was engaged in New Albany until 1872, when he was elected
to the chair of natural sciences in Center College at Danville, which he
has ably filled.  The Professor was married to Miss Cleland, of Lebanon,
Ky., in 1862.  She was a daughter of Rev. T. H. Cleland, D.D., and she
died in 1869.  The Professor's second marriage was in 1876 to Amanda C.
Helm.  The issue from this marriage was Elizabeth A. and Margaret C. Fales.
