Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Boyd County Edward M. Roberts, master mechanic, and master of transportation of the Coal and Iron Railway Company, of Ashland, Boyd County, Ky., was born in Wales in 1849. His father, Edward J. Roberts, is a native of England and came to Ashland, Ky., about the time his son was born, and became a contractor on the shore named road, then known as the Lexington & Big Sandy Railway. He still resides in Ashland. Edward M. Roberts was educated at the Beach Grove Academy. From 1865 (time of leaving school) until 1872 he was in the employ of the Lexington & Big Sandy Railway Company as fireman, workman in shops and locomotive engineer; from 1872 to 1881 was engineer on the Little Miami division, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati & St. Louis Railway; April, 1881, to March, 1885, was master mechanic, Ashland Coal and Iron Railway. March, 1885, to the present has been master of transportation and machinery, having thus been promoted from time to time as a reward for his industry, intelligence and attention to business.
