SETTLES, farmer and carriage builder; P. O. North Middletown; was born on the 11th of July, 1829, in Bourbon County; his grandfather, Joseph Settles, as a native Virginian, and moved to Kentucky at an early day and settled in Bourbon, where he remained till [sic] about the year 1843, at which time he emigrated to the State of Missouri, where he spent the remainder of his days. He was a man of remarkable constitution, and lived almost an entire century, being ninety-eight years of age at the time of his death. He raised five sons and two daughters; his eldest son, John T., was born in Kentucky in 1806, and married in 1827, Mary Shrader, who was a second cousin to the old Kentucky pioneer, Daniel Boone. This union was also blessed with five sons and two daughters: William H., the eldest son, is the subject of this sketch. When he was but twelve years of age his father died, leaving the responsibility of his mother and six younger children principally upon his hands. He succeeded, by the assistance of his mother, in giving the rest of the children a fair education, and to this day provides for his aged parent, who in now seventy-five years old. He was married on the 9th of May, 1854, to Lucinda Gardner, of Bourbon; the result of this marriage is seven children, five sons: Benjamin F., Edward P., Owen T., William H. and Robert, and two daughters, Elizabeth, who is the wife of Robert Wright and Mary Lou. Mr. Settles owns a small farm of 150 acres, besides his town property, which consists of a carriage factory, blacksmith shop, etc. He enjoys the reputation of being one of the best mechanics in the county. He is a member of the Good Templar order; he and wife and married daughter are members of the Christian Church; in politics he acts with the Democratic party.
