Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Boone Co. PHILIP O. GRIFFIN was born at Valonia, Jackson Co., Ind., June 18, 1864. His father was Joseph Griffin and his mother was Margaret E. (Denton) Griffin. Joseph Griffin was born in Jackson County, Ind., in 1832. He was a son of Benjamin and Mary Griffin, natives of Kentucky and Indiana respectively. Benjamin Griffin moved from Kentucky, and settled in Jackson County, Ind., at an early date, where he lived, a farmer, all his life. Joseph Griffin was the third child born; he was educated at the common-schools of Jackson County, and was a farmer by occupation, but a shoemaker by trade, and followed the latter all his life. He was for many years a member of the Baptist Church, and a firm supporter of its principles. He died April 28, 1883. He enlisted in Company G, Fifty-fourth Indiana Regiment, of the Federal Army as a private, and served only a short time. In 1860 he married Margaret E. Denton of Jackson County. To this union thirteen children has been born--five daughters and eight sons--viz: William I., Mary, Philip O., Marion J., Ida O., Charles, Levi J. (died August 27, 1887, aged seventeen years), Laura A., James E., Annie, Everett O., Blanch P. and Curtis C., of whom Mary died in infancy. Levi J., whose decease is recorded above, was one of the most intelligent and industrious youths of his age. He always had very delicate health. He had only a common school education, and his advantages for such education was somewhat limited. Notwithstanding his poor advantages, he was a great lover of books, as it was his highest aim to secure an education. He always attended Sunday-school, in which he was a faithful worker and an ardent supporter. Philip O. Griffin was brought up on the farm, and received a common-school education. He followed farming in Jackson County, Ind., until 1887, when he moved to Kentucky, and settled in Boone County, and engaged in business at Florence. He is a member of the Christian Church, and a very industrious and prosperous man. He is unmarried. Politically he is a Democrat.
