Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., Boone Co. GEORGE W. GAINES, a native of Boone County, Ky., was born in 1836, and is the eighth in a family of ten children born to James and Virginia (Watts) Gaines. James Gaines was a son of George and Susan (Graves) Gaines, and Virginia Watts was a daughter of Johnson and Susan (Davis) Watts, natives of Orange County, Va. George Gaines is a member of that large and numerous family in the United States who are descendants of four brothers by that name, who came from England, but by some one said to be of Welsh origin; the Watts are English. George W. Gaines is a typical Kentuckian in that he has an interest in the progress of his country; he is a farmer by occupation, and has always been so from choice, having been brought up on the farm. In 1865 he married Elizabeth Winston, daughter of Elder William and Lucetta (Watts) Winston. Lucetta Watts was a daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth (Goodrich) Watts. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Gaines: William W., Bettie and Lulie V. William Winston was born in 1866, and graduated at Georgetown College, Ky., in a class of six in 1887.
