Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., Boone Co. RICHARD V. COLLINS, a native of Boone County, Ky, was born December 3, 1832, and is the sixth child born to Richard and Susan (Scott) Collins, natives respectively of New York and Virginia. Stephen Collins, paternal grandfather of our subject, was a native of New York, of Irish extraction, who settled in Kenton County, Ky. He also served in the war of 1812. Richard Collins, father of R. V. Collins, was born in 1801, moved from Kenton to Boone County, and was quite a prominent physician at Burlington. He died in 1871. Richard V. Collins was reared in Burlington, and when fourteen years of age attended school at Covington, Ky., where he took an academical course. In 1851 he moved to Carroll County and engaged in farming. He now owns a farm of 250 acres four and one-half miles northwest of Carrollton. January 10, 1863, he married Miss Gertrude, daughter of Elsie and Louisa (Shackelford) Carrico, of Carroll County, but natives of Maryland and Kentucky.
