SANFORD was born in Bath County, Ky., June 26, 1856, son of Reuben and Sarah (Lyons) Sanford, natives respectively of Paris, Ky., and Bath County. The grandfather of our subject, William Sanford, was a native of Virginia and an early settler of Bourbon County, Ky. Reuben Sanford served in the Mexican war under Capt. Sims, who raised his Company in Bourbon County; and in the recent war, under Humphrey Marshall. His death took place in 1881 at the age of fifty years. John Lyons, maternal grandfather of our subject, was a native of Kentucky. John B. Sanford remained in Bath County until fifteen years of age, then served an apprenticeship of four years at the saddlery and harness trade, and in 1881 started in business for himself at Catlettsburg, where he carries a stock valued at $1,500, the famous Kentucky spring saddle being a specialty.
