RAMSEY, a native of Owingsville, Bath County, Ky., was born December 24, 1844, and is a son of William W. and Martha A. (Barnes) Ramsey. William W. Ramsey was born near Winchester, Clark County, Ky., in 1818; he attended lectures at the Medical College, Lexington, Ky., where he graduated in 1843, and subsequently practiced his profession in Owingsville until the time of his death in 1855. He was a very successful physician, and for many years before his death a strict member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a son of Alex. Ramsey, who was born five miles from Winchester, Clark County, Ky., was a farmer all his life, and lived and died in his native county. Mrs. Martha A. Ramsey, also a native of Owingsville, Ky., was a daughter of John W. and Ann (Hindman) Barnes. John W. Barnes, a native of Virginia, settled in Owingsville, Ky., at an early date, where he kept a hotel for many years. John A. Ramsey received his education in the schools of Owingsville, and at the age of fourteen commenced clerking, in which he was engaged until 1866. He then engaged in the dry goods business under the firm name of Richard & Ramsey, but after a few months sold out and resumed clerking for six months, when he again engaged in the dry goods trade as Smith & Ramsey. The latter partnership continued only six months, after which time Mr. Ramsey clerked until May 23, 1868, at that date establishing the hardware firm of John A. Ramsey & Co. This firm prospered until January 1, 1870, when it became Ramsey & Goodpaster, and continued under the latter name until January, 1877, since when Mr. Ramsey has conducted the business alone. He handles agricultural implements and everything usually to be found in a first-class hardware store. September 14, 1860, Mr. Ramsey married B.W. Goodpaster, of Owingsville, a daughter of Levi and Jane (Allen) Goodpaster. They are the parents of one child, viz: William G. Mr. And Mrs. Ramsey are members of the Christian Church. Mr. Ramsey is a Master Mason, and has been Worshipful Master of his lodge two years, representing his Lodge in the Grand Lodge several times. He is also a member of the I.O.O.F. and of the Encampment. In politics he affiliates with the Democrats.
