Bath County

SAM HART was born in Bath County, Ky., April 4, 1836, and is a son of George
and Sarah (Spencer) Hart.  George Hart was born in Pennsylvania in 1811,
came to Kentucky when a child with his parents and settled in Bath County,
where he spent his life, and died in May, 1886.  He was a strict member of
the Christian Church for many years before his death, and was a liberal
contributor to all church and charitable organizations.  He was a son of
Henry Hart, who was born near Harrisburg, Pa., and was an iron molder by
trade.  Mrs. Sarah Hart was born in Kentucky in 1822, a daughter of John and
Phoebe (Turner) Spencer.  John Sprncer was a native of Virginia, who settled
in Bath County, Ky., in quite an early day.  He subsequently moved to near
Springfield, Ill., returned to Bath County, and then went to Iowa, again
returning to Bath County, where he died.  Sam Hart was reared on the farm,
and received a common-school education.  In the fall of 1861 he enlisted in
the Confederate army, under Humphrey Marshall, serving until the close of
the war, and receiving a slight wound at Hazel Green, Ky.  He then returned
to Bath County, remained one year and then removed to Montgomery County,
where he has since resided.  January 22, 1868, he married Mrs. Mary B.
Smith, who bore him three children, Albert, Elvia and J.D. Madison.  Mrs.
Hart died May 29, 1876, and January 13, 1881, Mr. Hart married Hermacynthia
Lewis, of Bath County, Ky., a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Manier)
Lewis.  Thomas Lewis was a native of Bath County, and is still living at the
age of ninety.  Mr. Hart has always been engaged in agricultural pursuits,
and owns 200 acres of well-improved land.  Politically he is a Democrat.
Mr. And Mrs. Hart are members of the Christian Church.
