Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Barren County. GEORGE W. YOUNG was born in Hart County, Ky., August 22, 1832. His father, John Young, was born at Hiseville, in Barren County, in 1798. He was twice married; first, to a Miss Wilson, of Barren County, who at her death left three children, viz: Sallie, Keziah and a son who died in infancy. His second wife was Mrs. Mary W. (Bowling) Combs, of Hart County. To this marriage were born seven children, George W. being the only survivor and the eldest, after whom followed Susan B., Mary A., Bettie, Henrietta E., William B. and Edward S. John Young during his lifetime was engaged in agricultural pursuits, acquired a fine property and owned a number of slaves, all of which he lost through securities; but recovered some of his property, including seven slaves, that were freed in 1863. He died in December, 1881. He was an energetic man of business, and was a captain of militia before the war of 1861. He was a son of --- Young, who was of English parentage, a native of the Old Dominion, and one of the first settlers of Barren County. George W. Young was reared on a farm; his early school education amounted to no more than six months altogether, but, being devoted to books, his constant reading has made him conversant with the best literature of the day. In 1863 he made a trip to the Pacific coast, and there spent three years in mining operations, after which he returned to Kentucky, and resumed farming, which he has followed with excellent success up to the present time. He is the proprietor of two farms containing 180 and 185 acres, respectively. In April, 1871, he was united in marriage with Miss Idelia H., daughter of Denis G. and Susan B. Beasley, of Charlotte County, Va. To them have een born John D. and Early P., and four daughters: Mary S., Henrietta E., Rosa L. and Mattie W. (deceased). Politically Mr. Young is a Democrat, but takes little interest in politics, and is a Master Mason in H. B. Grant Lodge, No. 610.
