JAMES W. THOMERSON was born January 1, 1824, in Bedford County, Va., and
is the eldest of five sons and three daughters born to Christopher and
Nancy (Bassham) Thomerson. Christopher was also born and reared in
Bedford County; he was an excellent farmer, and immigrated to and
settled in the south part of Barren County, Ky., about 1838, and died in
1854; he was twice married; his second wife, Martha Jones, of Barren
County, bore him three children. James W. Thomerson was reared on a
farm, and remained with his father until he was twenty-two. He then
commenced for himself, working for $6 per month for three years.  He
then purchased 100 acres of timber land for $550; he continued to add to
this until he now owns 282 acres of as good land as in the county, 150
acres of which are in good state of cultivation, improved with fine
outbuildings, residence and four orchards.  In November, 1852, he
married Sarah Jane Britt, of Barren County, a daughter of Nelson and
Elizabeth (Kinchelo) Britt, who were natives, respectively, of Virginia
and Barren County, Ky. Nelson Britt was an extensive farmer and slave
owner, and was brought by his parents to Kentucky when a boy of ten
years.  His parents, Obediah and Sallie (Wheeler) Thomerson, were born
and reared in Virginia, and immigrated to Kentucky about 1819; the
father was nearly one hundred years old at the time of his death. To Mr.
and Mrs. Thomerson the following children were born:  Nancy E. Helms,
Eliza Jane Spradling (deceased), Rachel Ellen Ferguson, Amda [sic] J.
Ferguson, Susan I. Tracy, Julia R. B., Ann R. Ellis, George and Emma F.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomerson are members of the Christian Church and were
formerly members of the Grange.  Mr. Thomerson before the war was a
whig; he has since voted the Democratic ticket.
