EMANUEL MORRIS was born in Germany, December 15, 1826, the youngest of
the four children born to Michael and Caroline (Wendel) Morris.  Michael
Morris was also a native of Germany, where all his life he was
successfully engaged in general trading; he also served with distinction
in the army of Napoleon I.  Emanuel was educated in his native land, and
at the age of eighteen, in 1844, he immigrated to the United States;
remained for six months at New Orleans, and then moved to Louisville,
where for eighteen months he was engaged in the traveling dry goods
business.  In the early part of 1848 he opened a dry goods store at
Three Springs, Hart Co., Ky., and soon after opened another twelve miles
east of Glasgow, Barren County.  He continued to do business at both
these places until 1853, when he sold his interest in his store at Three
Springs, and continued to do business twelve miles east of Glasgow until
in 1863, when he came to Glasgow, Ky., and opened a large store, where
he has since continued business with abundant success.  He carries a
large and well selected stock of dry goods, clothing, hats, caps, boots,
shoes, ladies' and gents' furnishing goods, notions, etc., amounting to
an average of at least $30,000.  His business is one of the most
extensive in the place, and his annual sales amount to at least $65,000.
Mr. Moris served as magistrate of Barren County for six years, and has
been a member of the town council sixteen years.  His first wife, a
native of Monroe County, whom he married March 15, 1853, was Marinda
Turner, who bore him the following children:  Cornelia Belle, wife of
Albert Morey; Victoria, wife of Monroe Dinkelspeel; and Ferdinand.  Mrs.
Miranda Morris died May 10, 1863, and January 5, 1864, Mr. Morris
married Henrietta Frank, a native of Germany. Nine children blessed
their union:  Carrie, wife of Joseph Kroch, of Chicago; Hermon, Edward,
Julius, Louis, Gustave, Lee, Bloom, Joseph F. and Max.  Politically Mr.
Morris is a Republican, and is one of the most successful business men
in the Green River country.
