Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Barren County. WILLIAM S. MARTIN was born June 4, 1842, near Cave City. His parents, Solomon and Susan Jane (Harris) Martin, were also born and reared near that place, and had a family of ten boys and four girls. His paternal grandparents, Isaac and Patsey (Martin) Martin were natives of Virginia, immigrated to Barren county about 1805, and settled on 400 acres, where a part of Cave City now stands. Isaac was a slave owner, and a soldier under Gen. Jackson in the war of 1812; he died about 1856, aged ninety- six, and his widow in the fall of 1865, over one hundred years old; they were of Irish origin. William S. Martin's maternal grandparents were John and ----(Shelton) Farris. They emigrated from Virginia to Barren County, Ky., about 1814, and settled near Cave City, where the grandfather became an extensive farmer. He was three times married; his first wife was Miss Shelton, as above. William S. Martin was reared on the farm and remained with his parents until the fall of 1861, when he enlisted in Company C, Sixth Kentucky Infantry. He participated in all the engagements of his regiment, and was ever ready for duty, except seven weeks, when he lay sick at Bowling Green with typhoid fever. He was promoted to corporal in 1862, and at the battles of Jonesboro was taken prisoner; nineteen days later he was exchanged, and surrendered with his regiment in the spring of 1865, when he returned home and engaged in farming, which he has since followed. December 21, 1869, he married Mary W. Berry, of Barren County, Ky., a daughter of Hezekiah and Frances W. (Lewis) Berry, also of Barren County. Seven children blessed their union: Henry L., William E. (deceased), Frances J., Charlie (deceased), Lizzie B., Hezekiah B. (deceased) and Sarah Ann. After marriage Mr. Martin rented for three years; then located where he now resides of 102 acres, well improved. He and wife are members of the Baptist Church; in politics he is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Seymour.
