Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Barren County. JOHN H. MAGAN, the third of the five sons and four daughters of James W. and Martha J. (Wade) Magan, was born August 24, 1840, in Bedford County, Va., of which county his parents were also natives. James W. Magan was a farmer and slave owner, and immigrated with his family to Ohio County, Ky., about 1848, where he purchased a farm and remained until his death, in 1869, at the age of fifty-six years. He was a son of James Magan, of Virginia, and of Irish origin. Mrs. Martha J. Magan was a daughter of John and Gemima (Reynolds) Wade, who were born and reared in Virginia, and immigrated to Ohio County, Ky., about 1846. John H. Magan was reared on a farm, and remained with his parents until of age, when he commenced farming for himself in Ohio County. In 1871 he embarked in the goods business at Fordsville, same county; in 1879 he located at Muldraugh Station, Meade County, and in 1883 located at Glasgow Junction, where is now is successfully emgaged in the mercantile business. In February, 1869, he married Josephine Johnson, of Ohio County, and a daughter of John and Sumira (Hale) Johnson. Five children were born to their union: John H., Cora I., Helen, Anna May and Josephine. Mr. Magan and wife are members of the Baptist Church; he is an active member of the Masonic fraternity; in politics he is a Democrat, and cast his first presendential vote for Gen. MacClelan.
