Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Barren County. WILLIAM B. ELLIS, second of the four children of George A. M. and Adaline (Downing) Ellis, was born August 10, 1858, where he now resides on Peter's Creek. George A. M. Ellis was born near Jamestown, Barren County, and in his younger days flatboated down the Barren and Green Rivers to New Orleans; later he farmed and in 1849 went to California overland. After making some money in mining he returned by way of Panama, and has since farmed. He is a son of William and Elizabeth (Hughes) Ellis. William Ellis was born in Fayette County, Ky., in 1785, and when a lad of seven years was brought to Barren County. He is still living on Peter's Creek, where he first settled, and has passed through all the hardships of pioneer life; he has served as deputy sheriff and colonel of State militia, and is a member of the Baptist Church. His father, John Ellis, was born in Maryland, and moved with his parents to Virginia. About 1785 he immigrated to Fayette County, Ky., where he lived in a fort and fought the Indians under Gen. Wayne. He married Elizabeth Chapman, of Fayette County, and in 1802 located at Peter's Creek, Barren County, where he purchased and improved several hundred acres, and built the first mill south of Glasgow; he was also a distiller and of English origin. Mrs. Adaline Ellis was born in Allen County, Ky., a daughter of Benjamin and Isabel (Campbell) Downing. William B. Ellis was reared on a farm, and after he became of age, he taught two terms of school. In December, 1883, he married Anna Thomerson, a daughter of James W. and Sarah J. (Britt) Thomerson. One child has blessed their union - James Oscar. Mr. Ellis is a Democrat and cast his first presidential vote for Gen. Hancock; he is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and his wife of the Christian.
