In January 1850, he went to California, where he engaged for two years successfully in mining, after which he returned to Barren County, his present home. He is the son of John Dodd, a native of Culpeper County, Va., who was born November 7, 1794; removed in 1797 with his parents to Kentucky, and in 1800 to Barren County, where he died in 1851. His father, John Dodd, married Sallie, daughter of William Settle, of Barren County. She was born in Virginia in 1795 and died in 1852, and from their union sprang Mary A. (Davidson), James A. (deceased), Elizabeth (Williams), William F., Squire B., Nathaniel L., Sarah A. (Settle), George C. (deceased), Beverly W. (deceased), Simpson F. (deceased), and Virginia (Alexander). February 22, 1853, Nathaniel L. married ELizabeth J., daughter of Meriwether and Lucy L (Lewis) Spillman of Barren County. She was born in 1832 and died May 20, 1873. Their children are Lewis, Lucy C. (Parker), John A., Willie and Mary F. Mr Dodd is a farmer, having 100 acres of productive land in a good state of cultivation. In religion he is a Baptist; politically he was an old line Whig, but is now a Democrat.
