Backroads of Barren County, Kentucky, newspaper articles written by William Daniel Tolle 1877 through 1920's, compiled by Sandra K. Gorin, Gorin Genealogical Publishing, copyright July 1991. pp.9-10 [Barren County]. Beaver Creek. WALTER DEPP settled on the creek below the Sam Oldham farm. He was a son of Peter Depp of Fallen Timber. He married a Miss Burks, and raised a family of eleven children. Gertrude, their oldest child married Black Hatchett of Blue Spring Creek. Peter is single at the present writing. John B. married Miraba Reneau. Mary, now dead, married Richard Slemons. Dick, (now dead) never married, died in Arizona. Adolph married Bettie Bagby; Fannie married Franklin Young; Lou married Willie Bagby; Joel maried Jennie Bagby; Raymond is single; Walter, who is dead, married Jennie Anderson. Two of Gertrude's children are all that I have any acquaintance with. Clarence, their oldest child, and Thomas. Clarence is a leading lawyer of the Glasgow bar. He has served several terms as Deputy Sheriff and High Sheriff of Barren County; all the time the law allowed. He has been rather unfortunate in the losing of two wives. He first married Corilde Mansfield, a daughter of George Mansfield, formerly of Glasgow, Ky., but now of Texas. His second wife was Miss Lela T. Harlow. His present wife Miss Lizzy McCandless. By strict economy and close attention to business Mr. Hatchett has become a capitalist. Thomas was closely connected with the Sheriff's office for several years. He also, like his brother, Clarence, was a good economist. He married Miss Nellie Snoddy, a daughter of the lamented George Snoddy of Glasgow. They are living near the noted Bearwallow farm in the northern part of the county. They own a landed estate which is self sustaining. Its rents would more than support their family and is worth one hundred dollars per acre. John B., the second son of Walter Depp, raised a family of two boys and four girls. His oldest daughter called "Pitsy" married Wade Rowland, a son of George Rowland of Fallen Timber Creek. The last I knew of him he was out west, identified with, and held a lucrative position in a bank. His oldest son Tip was out West and in possession of a large ranch. His other son Owen had taken up the business of instructor and died while teaching high school. Lizzey married a son of Dr. Perry Allen, a dentist of the long ago. One son was born to them and the mother died regretted and lamented by all who knew her. The child lived and was given the name of "Depp Allen," and is being raised by its maternal grand parents. Miss Nettie B. has not made any matrimonial contract that we are aware of. She is principally a self- made girl and independent of the other sex. She has been engaged in school teaching for many years and stands at the head of her profession. She has served one term as Superintendent of Schools in Barren County. Lilly, the youngest daughter was teacher at one time. She is happily married to --- Matthews, and living on a farm which affords all the necessities of life. Mr. Depp represented the County of Barren in the Legislature at one time. he has been identified with the Sheriff's office by appointment at different times. Adolph Depp, another son of Walter Depp, held the office of Sheriff of Barren County one term, and I think served as deputy a term or two. He is now engaged in farming a few miles north of Glasgow and in a prosperous condition. He has a son who is practicing, or preparing to practice, denistry. Of the other members of the Walter Depp family I know but little. They are located in different parts of the country and generally engaged in farming. I see Peter, the oldest son, occasionally on the streets of Glasgow. He appears to be bent under the pressures of age. William Depp, a brother of Walter, married Ann Bailey, a daughter of William Bailey of the Mount Vernon country seven miles southeast of Glasgow, near the Burkesville road. He owned a farm on Beaver Creek below his brother Walter's farm. Three children were raised by them, two sons and one daughter. The daughter married Andrew Johnson, the son of Henry Johnson, formerly of Tennessee. She has long since been dead. The youngest son is also dead, leaving only one of the family, James, of the firm of Depp and Morris of Glasgow, Kentucky. This family including the parents, and two children filled premature graves. Mr. Johnson has been, and probably is now, a deputy clerk or Notary Public and serves the people in that capacity, in that section of the country.
