Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Barren County. JAMES L. BRYAN, son of Albert and Eliza J. (Settle) Bryan, was born in Barren County, Ky., July 15, 1849. Albert Bryan is of Scotch-Irish descent, and was born in Virginia in 1815. At the age of nine years he came with his parents to Barren County, Ky. Here he grew to manhood, was educated and married, and is still engaged in agricultural pursuits; he resides on the old homestead six miles east of Glasgow. He and his wife are members of the Missionary Baptist Church. His father, James Bryan, was a native of Virginia. Mrs. Eliza J. Bryan is also of Scotch- Irish descent, and was born in Barren County in 1829. James L. Bryan was educated at the common schools and academies of his native county, and at the age of twenty-one engaged as a salesman in the dry goods store of his uncle, James Bryan of Glasgow; after two years he embarked in the dry goods business at the same place, in partnership with Clarence Wood, under the firm name of Bryan & Wood. In August, 1876, this firm was consolidated with that of Cheek & Williams, and the business continued under the style of Bryan, Cheek & Co. In 1877, Mr. Williams retired, followed in 1880 by Mr. Wood, and the business is now conducted by the firm of Bryan & Cheek. They carry a large and well-selected stock of dry goods, clothing, boots, shoes, hats and furnishing goods and do a large and flourishing trade, their annual sales amounting to over $60,000. February 3, 1876, Mr. Bryan married Rosa R. Barrick, also a native of Barren County; she is a daughter of Hon. J. R. and Louann B. (Moss) Barrick, and was born August 4, 1854. Mr. and Mrs. Bryan are members of the Missionary Baptist Church, and are the parents of two sons - Albert B. and Louis R. Mr. Bryan is also a member of the Masonic fraternity. (See sketch of Hon. J.
