Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Anderson Co. GEORGE C. COHEN is a son of Alfred and Phebe (Faris) Cohen. Alfred Cohen was born in Paris, France, and when five years of age was brought to this country by his parents, Alfred E. and Maria (Helbert) Cohen, who settled at New Orleans, which place Alfred left at the age of fifteen, located at Lexington, Ky., and became a landscape painter, and in 1852 removed to Boyle County, where he was engaged in farming until his death in 1880, in which year his wife also died. They had a family of seven children, viz.: Joseph A., Jonathan J., Elizabeth (decreased), Alfred (deceased), George C., Lucy F. (Mrs. John W. Faris), and Maria C. (deceased). George C. Cohen was born in Boyle County, December 17, 1854, was sent to the preparatory department of Centre College, Danville, at the age of eleven, and graduated from the college in 1874; he then taught school three months in Garrard County and eight months in the Lawrenceburg Seminary, in the meantime studying law under Durham & Jacobs of Danville. In September, 1876, he made Lawrenceburg his place of residence and began practice; in 1877 he was elected city attorney, and was also engaged in publishing and editing the Anderson News. In 1878 he was elected county attorney and re-elected in 1882, his term expiring in 1886. At present Mr. Cohen is president of the Real Estate and Investment Association of Anderson County, and also continues the practice of law. September 16, 1879, he married Miss Kate McKinney Brown, daughter of Col. William and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Brown, of Nicholasville, and there have been born to this marriage four children: Elizabeth B., Jeannie F., George C., Jr., and Katie B. Mr. Cohen is a member of Anderson Lodge, No. 90, A. & F. M.
