Nathaniel and Hiram Shaw, partners, purchased 142 1/2 feet on Broadway "opposite the University" from Richard H. Chinn and wife, Eliza M., in 1843 and erected a house here for the occupancy of one of their families. The lot was bounded "on the lower side by Josiah Ennis and on the upper side by Gaugh."
After Nathaniel Shaw's death, the real estate of the partners was partitioned in 1849. All but 60 feet of the Broadway lot had been sold, and together with the house, it was conveyed by Hiram Shaw and wife, Nancy, to Nathaniel Shaw's widow, Emma, and infant children--Hiram, Catherine, Emma, Julia, Ann and Margaret Shaw.
W.M. Taylor, son of Leonard Taylor, bought the "house and lot" from the heirs in 1855.
Taylor conveyed the property to Mary E. Atchison in 1860.
