John Caldwell ("wheelwright, High St."--1806 Directory) was residing in the big frame house back of this, facing High St., when he purchased the corner lot from former County Justice Samuel Blair, and this adjoining lot from Fredrick Shivel, before 1818 and built this house.

The 1818 Directory lists: "John Caldwell, Blue-dyer and Cotton spinner, High corner Main Cross." Blair's deed, dated 1818, for the corner lot said it began "at the corner of the lot on which the said Caldwell now lives on Main Cross ST., fronting on said street 32 feet, thence at right angles 66 feet on High St.; binding on Lot No. 73 where on Caldwell now lives." Caldwell owned and still used the High St. lot back of this, as well as the lot next to that.

Andrew Caldwell bought the entire property in 1830 and owned it for many years.
