(MISSES) JACKSON SEMINARY

343 S. Broadway, Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky
Built 1855

Here is another of the fine homes Mr. John McMurtry built, lived in  for a while and sold. When he conveyed this house to Miss Ellen Jackson January 23, 1855, it was described as "the lot on which John McMurtry lately resided." Here for ten years the Misses Jackson conducted a fine female school. One of the teachers was Eugenia De Roode (1859-60 Directory: "Miss Eugenia DeRoode, music teacher, Jackson Seminary.")

In 1865 it was bought for $20,000 by Beriah M. Jones, Richard M. Robinson and Wm. A. Hoskins. In 1868 it was conveyed to the Baptist Female School." Later it became the Baptist Female College, under Prof. A.S. Worrall. Rev. J.C. Freeman became the next president, and he was succeeded by Dr. Robert Ryland, of Richmond, Virginia.

Today the commodious building that for years housed famous schools is an apartment house.
