JANETT INGLES' HOUSE

John Ingles built this house and its twin (#526) more than a century ago. (1838 Directory: "John Ingles, joiner, S. Upper above Maxwell").

Edwin Stephens and wife, Sarah, deeded the house (42 feet) to Miss Janett Ingles in March, 1849, "one-half of Lot. No. 14, together with the buildings, being part of Lot. No. 14 allotted to E. Stephens in the division of the estate of Luther Stephens." It bordered on the north "Lot No. 13, owned by James Holliday."

James Holliday and wife, Isabella, and John B. ingles conveyed their interest, as heirs, to Janett in 1864, the deed saying: "John Ingles, dec'd, in his lifetime furnished money, material, labor and other things which were used in the construction of the buildings now upon the lot hereby conveyed."

John Ingles had mortgaged "the furniture now in my house" in May, 1839. It included a secretary, three tables, bird and cage, three beds, nine chairs, shovel and tongs, andirons, pair candlesticks, churn, wheel and reel, carpet, window blinds, etc. etc.

Miss Janett Ingles, in her will (1886) made cash bequests to her sister, Isabella Harding and children, and brother, John Ingles. She willed her house to her niece, Mary F. Holliday.
