Joseph Barbee in June, 1813, purchased from Thos. Pindell and wife, Mary E., a frontage of 80 feet here on which were a "brick Negro house," which Barbee was using for his shop, and a "red frame," which he demolished. He built this brick residence for himself and the adjoining one to sell. (He sold the adjoining house to Wm. M. Wraves in 1817).

Barbee and his wife, Pamilla M.H., issued a $5,000 mortgage February 4, 1824, to the Bank of the United States on this property, "Now in occupation of said Joseph Barbee."

Col. Josiah Dunham purchased it December, 1826, and sold it to Alfred Warner November, 1833. It was described as between the alley and "Eli F. King, where he lives."

Warner sold it to Dr. Wm. H. Richardson in January, 1838. (The 1838 Directory lists as residing here, "Lewis Richardson," son of the famous Transylvania University professor, Dr. Wm. H.)

It remained in Dr. Richardson's ownership until his death. In February, 1866, Wm. H. Richardson and Louis Richardson, "of Holmes County, Miss., sold their interest to Wesley Spencer. The deed said it "was devised to us with the other children of my father, Louis Richardson, by my grandfather, Dr. Wm. H. Richardson." W.S. McChesney and wife were living in the house, the deed stated.

It was sold at public auction that year to Polly Ann McChesney, who conveyed it to Sarah M. Bishop, wife of Purnell Bishop. The deed was from Wesley Spencer, B. Richardson and W.S. McChesney and wife.

J.T. Vance bought it (54 feet) in 1887 from Josephine Bishop. &c.
