Eight miles south of Irvine, Route 89 encounters a substantial ridgeline, and the highway climbs several hundred
vertical feet to surmount it. While not an impossible task for a traveler on foot in good physical condition,
one would expect that this obstacle would have been enough to cause a Native American trail breaker
to seek an alternative route to the south. The Kentucky and Red Rivers, and hollows that run south for
many miles without interruption provided that alternative path.
At least theoretically, the Kentucky River can be navigated upstream from the boat launching site in Irvine.
The trail leaves Rt. 89 as the eastern fork of Station Camp Creek follows the Wagersville Road hollow.
As the Warrior's Path turns to the south, it follows a series of linked hollows. Several miles of the
trail in this area lie within the Daniel Boone National Forest, and this is a prime hiking and camping area.
